About Me

Hi there. My name is Laura. I’m thrilled that you’re visiting Shemomedjamo!

Allow me to tell you a bit more about myself.  In 20 words or less, I am a college student and a vegetarian who is major lover of travel and all things food (I’m hesitant to use the word “foodie” given how some people associate it with those who are only into food to be trendy. Trend or not, food is a defining contribution to who I am).

The more detailed story is I attend college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which is where my passions for food and dining have fully erupted.  Nothing thrills me more than trying a new restaurant and experiencing new food. I care a lot about nutrition and healthy living and my focus on this is where my decision to become a vegetarian emerged from. My body feels better when I do not eat meat, plain and simple. For the meantime, I still eat seafood, but I imagine that will change at some point in the future.

My love of food is linked with another passion of mine: hunger relief.  With how much I love food, it both saddens and angers me to know the number of people in the world who do not have access to it. I have become committed to trying to change this. For several months I interned at Philabundance, the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley, which is also a part of the Feeding America national food bank network. I learned about how many people are struggling from food insecurity and how important it is to do what I can to help. Even the smallest donation is huge in helping organizations, like Philabundance, make a difference.

As I continue with my life in Philadelphia and the various other places I intend on experiencing, I know that I will eat a lot of food. I will use the food in these places as an introduction to the culture and lifestyle there. It will be how I get to know each place I am in. I plan on documenting it all, from restaurants to farmers markets, so that you can get to know these places too.
